UIL sets May 4 as target date for lifting sports suspension

May 4 is the target date for the possible lifting of the current suspension of University Interscholastic League sports activities.

“The UIL medical advisory panel met Sunday and they reported that the target date remains May 4,” said UHS head coach and and athletic director R.T. Gonzales. “The UIL still hopes to complete the 2020 spring sports season.”

This is the fourth week of the suspension of UIL-sanctioned sports activities for the spring sports because of the health threat caused by the COVID-19 virus.

According to a press release made by the UIL late last week, the date of May 4 was set to put the UIL activities in compliance with an executive order issued by Governor Greg Abbott mandating that Texas public schools remain temporarily closed until May 4.

The UIL reported that it is further modifying contingency plans and extending its previously announced timeline for completing UIL activities for this academic school year.

Those modifications are based on schools returning to operations on May 4.

As the date approaches, the UIL will monitor all available information and provide its member schools with more on district and post-season date adjustments related to the extension of activities.

Though all in-person contests, practices, and workouts are suspended, the UIL will provide a reasonable acclimatization period for practices to occur prior to resuming contests and games early next month.

While in-person practices are not allowed during the current suspension period for sports activities, the UIL is allowing electronic, video, and teleconferencing methods of communication for spring sports athletics.

Schools are limited to a maximum of eight hours per week per activity, in addition to a maximum of 60 minutes per day, Monday through Friday.
