Members of the Uvalde High School cross-country team will begin their season schedule next Saturday when they compete in the Del Rio Invitational meet at the Del Rio Middle School.
Only the UHS varsity and junior varsity teams will vie in the running meet.
“We are excited to begin the 2019 season,” said UHS head cross-country coach Libby Guzman.
The UHS Invitational running meet is scheduled for Aug. 24.
Tops among the returning athletes from last season’s varsity program are seniors Kayden Carrasco and James Nevarez, juniors Tito Gonzalez, Brisa Rodriguez, Esmy Garcia, Alex Nolasco, Ariana Reyes, Briana Crow, and Robert Guerrero, and sophomores Tony Hernandez and Paul Hernandez.
“Our returning runners should set the tone for our program this season,” said Guzman. “We expect to have a competitive season.”
Coach Guzman said that there is still time for prospective runners to join the UHS cross-country program by contacting her at 830-261-0001.
“Any student-athlete who would like to join can contact me for more information,” said Guzman. “Sports physicals are required before any new runners participate in team practice.”
Assisting Coach Guzman with the UHS cross-country team this season will be newcomer Brittany Keeney Walker.
“I am excited to have Brittany join our staff,” said Coach Guzman. “I know she will help our cross-country program.”
Other cross-country meets for the Coyotes and Lobos this season will include: Medina Valley, Aug. 31; San Antonio FEAST, Sept. 7; Eagle Pass Border Bash, Sept. 14; Corpus Christi Islander Splash, Sept. 21; SWTJC, Sept. 28; and Texas Lutheran, Oct. 5.
The District 28-5A meet is Oct. 17 at Medina Valley.
