Tomorrow night, the Uvalde Lobos will complete their District 29-5A soccer schedule, while the Uvalde Coyotes will wind up their 2018 soccer season.
The Lobos will host the Eagle Pass Winn Lady Mavericks at the Uvalde High School soccer field, while the Coyotes will travel to Eagle Pass to play the Winn Mavericks.
Varsity action tomorrow here and at Eagle Pass will get underway at 7 p.m.
Preceding the varsity match will be a 5 p.m. junior varsity contest.
Coach Russell McElroy’s Lobos, 7-1-1 in district play and 10-7-2 for the season, will celebrate UHS Seniors Night as the senior players Sarah Mize, Jackie Gomez, Abigail Perez, Caryssa Mendoza, Alix Valenzuela and Katelin Sena will be honored during a special ceremony.
The Lobos will enter play tomorrow coming off a big 3-2 road victory over the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys Tuesday.
With the win, the Lobos clinched no worse than a second-place finish in the district soccer standings.
“The temperature at five o’clock was hot and the artificial turf made things hotter. Our girls had to dig deep to pull out a 3-2 win,” said Coach McElroy.
“I was proud of the necessary adjustments the team made at halftime. The girls came out and executed good team Lobos soccer in the second half,” said McElroy. “It was a physical, rough match. We lost one player to an ankle injury in the first half and have several other girls who had sore ankles following the match. Hopefully, we will have them all back in our lineup for Friday.”
Sarah Mize scored the first goal of the match for the Lobos. She connected on a direct free kick just three minutes into the match.
Mize later was sidelined because of an injury.
Nine minutes into the second half, Arissa Perez tied the score with a goal.
She received an assist from Maribel Soliz.
What proved to be the game-winning goal came with just under 11 minutes to go in the match as Caryssa Mendoza made a breakaway through the defense and scored.
The Lobos have clinched a post-season playoff spot.
Their opponent, and the date, time and site, for their bi-district playoff game have yet to be determined.
Prior to the McCollum contest, the Lobos battled the Floresville Jaguars to a 1-1 tie in district soccer competition at Floresville on March 9.
Coach Keith Pendleton’s Coyotes, 2-7 in district play and 5-15-3 for the season, will wind up their season schedule against Winn tomorrow at Eagle Pass.
Last month, the Coyotes lost to Winn, 4-1, in the first district meeting. That match was played at UHS.
The Coyotes will enter play tomorrow following a 3-0 loss to the McCollum Cowboys Tuesday night.
With 13:32 left in the match, a McCollum player received a red card for rough play.
For the Coyotes, the match Tuesday was the final home action for the 13 UHS seniors on the team, including David Cobos, Aldo Huerta, Alejandro Chavez, Cody Castillo, Justin Olivo, Keith Pendleton Jr., George Alamillo, Jonathan Alcantar, Diego Marines, Ryan Talavera, Ryan Aguilar, Marcos Martinez and Francisco Perez.
