UHS captures District 29-5A baseball championship


The Uvalde Coyotes are the District 29-5A baseball champions.

They completed their regular-season schedule with a 14-0 district victory over the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks last Friday night at Eagle Pass.

For Coach Ricky Salazar’s Coyotes avenged a 2-1 loss suffered against the Mavericks in action back on April 3 at Marvin Kolinek Field.

With their win last Friday, the Coyotes finished district play with an 8-2 record, one game ahead of the San Antonio Harlandale Indians in the District 29-5A team standings.

Last Thursday night, the Indians trounced the McCollum Cowboys, 14-4, to improve their district record to 7-3.

With the loss, the Cowboys dropped down into third place with a 6-4 district record.

In the other district game last Friday, the Floresville Tigers walloped the Southside Cardinals, 18-0, at Southside.

With their win, the Tigers improved their district record to 5-4.

The Coyotes now will play the Corpus Christi Calallen Wildcats in a best-of-three, bi-district playoff series, starting tonight at Devine.

The remainder of the series will be played at Corpus Christi Saturday.

Harlandale will face the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles in a single game playoff set for tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial.

Tonight at San Antonio, McCollum will begin a best-of-three series against the Corpus Christi King Mustangs.

The game will start at 7 p.m.

Saturday, the two teams will do battle in game two at Corpus Christi’s Cabinass Field, beginning at 11 a.m.

If needed, game three will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of game two.

Tomorrow at Floresville, the Floresville Tigers will start their best-of-three series against the Corpus Christi Calallen Wildcats, at 7 p.m.

Game two of the series is set for 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi.
