Texas leads the nation in student participation in sports

Texas continues to lead the nation in the number of students who participate in high school athletics.

According to numbers released by the National Federation of State High School Associations, 834,558 Texas youngsters participated in athletics during the 2016-17 school year.

Texas topped runner-up California, where 800,364 youngsters participated in sports last school year.

New York ranked a distant third with 367,387 students participating.

Rounding out the top 10 states were Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey and Minnesota.
