Northwest Eaton tops Forney for Class 5A baseball title


The Northwest Eaton Eagles defeated the Forney Jackrabbits, 4-1, in the Class 5A baseball state championship game last Saturday afternoon.

Down 1-0, the Eagles scored three times in the fifth inning and added a run in the sixth inning on the way to winning their state baseball title.

With one out in the fifth inning, Cade Winquest and Jarod Seals drew consecutive walks.

Winquest and Seals moved up one base on as they pulled off a double steal.

Clean-up hitter Zach Wilson singled to left field to plate Winquest.

Later in the inning, Sean Klein singled to center field to drive in Seals.

The third run of the inning for the Eagles came on a balk by the pitcher.

Brock Webber hit a run-scoring single for the Eagles in the sixth inning.

Pitcher Riley Taylor retired nine of the last 10 batters that he faced en route to his complete-game victory.

Taylor allowed only three hits and walked three, while he posted seven strikeouts.

Sean Klein and Brock Webber each collected two hits to lead Eaton’s nine-hit offensive attack. They both drove in one run.

Jonathan Childress was tagged with the mound loss for Forney. He allowed four earned runs.

Austin Ream pitched the final two innings in relief.

Eaton finished with a 34-9-1 season record, while Forney final season record was 29-14-1.
