Lobos play defending champions

The defending District 29-5A champion Southside Lady Cardinals will be in Uvalde tomorrow night to play the Lobos.

Varsity action between the Lobos and the Lady Cards is set to begin at 6:30 p.m. in Uvalde High School’s Harvey Kinchlow Gymnasium.

Both sub-varsity games will start at 5 p.m. The junior varsity teams will play in Kinchow Gym, while the freshman teams will play in Oscar Cruz Gym.

Coach Jessica Cardenas’ Southside Lady Cardinals are the defending district champions and they were a pre-season pick to repeat as district champions this season.

The Lady Cards, 2-0 in district and 21-3 for the season, whipped the Floresville Jaguars, 52-31, Tuesday night at Floresville.

Scoring information from the game was not available at press time.

Last Friday, the Lady Cardinals opened district play with a 49-38 win over the Harlandale Indians at Southside High School.

Guard Desirae Arocha, a 5-foot-7 senior, topped the scoring for Southside with 15 points.

Arocha is the leading scorer for Southside this season. She has scored an average of just over 14 points per ball game.

Other top players for the Lady Cards include post Dominque Ramos, a 5-foot-8 senior, guard Marcelina Lopez, a 5-foot-senior, and forward Madeline Soto, a 5-foot-8 freshman. All are scoring an average of about 10 points per game.

Coach Gisel Mireles’ Lobos, 0-2 in district play and 4-21 for the season, will go into the game tomorrow following a 41-18 loss they suffered against the Eagle Pass Winn Lady Mavericks Tuesday night in Kinchlow Gym.

The Lobos struggled to score with any offensive consistency through the course of the ball game.

They also turned the ball over a number of times throughout the contest.

Deandra Vera, Zaneta Salazar, Kyle Sendejo and Kaitlyn Willemin each scored four points, while Nathalie Ramirez scored two points.

Last Friday night, the Lobos lost a 59-42 road decision to the San Antonio McCollum Cowboys.

Up 32-26 at the end of the first half, the McCollum girls outscored the Lobos, 15-4, in the third period and held off the Lobos in the final period to win the ball game.

Stefanie Esquivel and Elany Guerra led the scoring for McCollum with 19 points and 12 points, respectively.

Alyssa Rodriguez tallied 17 points to lead individual scoring for the Lobos.

Deandra Vera also scored in double figures for the Lobos. She netted 10 points.

Others scoring for Uvalde were Kaitlyn Willemin and Zaneta Salazar, each with four points; Nathalie Ramirez, Shyann Dockall and Nataly Santos, each with two points; and Jasmine Lewallen, with one point.

Following action tomorrow night, the Lobos will be on the road Tuesday to play the San Antonio Harlandale Indians.

The Lobos and the Indians will do battle in varsity competition starting at 6:30 p.m.

Prior to that, the sub-varsity teams will play at 5 p.m.

One week from tomorrow, the Lobos will be back home to host the Louisville Jaguars.

The varsity game will begin at 6:30 p.m., while the two sub-varsity games will commence at 5 p.m.
