Lobos enjoy success in track-and-field

The Uvalde Lobos did not advance an athlete to the state track-and-field meet, but 2017 was a huge year for the Uvalde High School girls track-and-field program.

Besides winning the District 29-5A girls’ team track-and-field championship, the Lobos advanced three athletes to last weekend’s regional track meet at San Antonio.

UHS seniors Mabel Fowler and Sara Ramos placed in their respective events, while UHS freshman Kayden Carrasco competed well but did not place.

“Mabel, Sara, and Kayden represented us well in the regional meet,” said UHS head track-and-field coach Libby Guzman.

“Mabel recorded her best time of the season in the mile and was just a few seconds off of recording her season-best time in the two-mile. Sara threw her personal best in the shot put,” said Guzman. “For Kayden, it was a good experience. She ran a few seconds off of her personal-best time, but gained experience by competing in the regional meet.”

Mabel Fowler placed fifth in the 3,200 meters with her time of 11:48.77.

Fowler improved on her District 30-5A time of 11:59.33 and her Area time of 12:03.539, but she did not top her personal-best time of 11:44 recorded earlier this season.

Anna Norman of Boerne Champion won the regional championship with her time of 11:12.13.

Fowler claimed fifth place in the 1,600-meter run. She posted a time of 5:26.02, which was her personal-best time of the year.

Fowler won district honors with a time of 5:29.26 and posted a time of 5:33.279 in the Area meet.

Sydney Cole of Dripping Springs won the Region IV title with a time of 5:15.37.

Sara Ramos put the shot 40 feet and 4.75 inches, which was her best performance of the year.

Prior to the regional meet, Ramos won district with a put of 35 feet and 1 inch, and finished third in Area competition with a put of 36 feet and 1 inch.

Alexis Sacky of Corpus Christi Calallen won first place with her put of 42 feet and 7 inches.

Kayden Carrasco finished 11th overall in the Regional 800-meter dash competition with her time of 2:30.52.

She finished second in District 29-5A with a time of 2:28.82 and she posted a time of 1:25.725 in the Area meet.
