Lobos, Coyotes clinch 2021 playoffs

Uvalde High School softball and baseball teams will advance to the post-season playoffs next year.

With only four high schools in UHS’s new district for baseball and for softball, all four schools will advance to the playoffs.

UHS’s new district for baseball and for softball, 30-4A, includes Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, and Pearsall.

District 30-4A playoff teams in softball and in baseball will face teams from District 29-4A in bi-district competition.

District 29-4A includes Devine, Hondo, Pleasanton, and Somerset for baseball, while it includes those four teams and San Antonio Brooks Academy for softball.

The fate of the 2020 Texas high school softball season and baseball season, including post-season play, hinges on whether classes will resume early next month.

On March 16, the University Interscholastic League suspended spring sports activities because of the COVID-19 virus health crisis.

Less than two weeks later, the sports suspension was extended to May 4 because of Governor Greg Abbott’s executive order to suspend classes because of the coronavirus until May 4.

When the UIL’s sports suspension took effect, Uvalde High School teams looked to be in good position to make it to post-season play in both baseball and in softball.

Coach Sart Perez’s Coyotes were locked in a two-way tie with the Southwest Dragons for first place in the District 28-5A baseball standings.

Both the Coyotes and the Dragons were four games into district competition.

In softball, Coach Kristina Finger’s Lobos were in fourth place in the District 28-5A standings.

The Lobos were six games into district play.

If District 28-5A play in softball and baseball resumes next month, the season may run into the month of June.

At present, the UIL is studying contingency plans for remainder of the season should the current suspension be lifted.
