David Hernandez and Maria Rodriguez, volleyball officials with the Texas Association of Sports Officials, were recognized July 13 at the TASO State Convention at The Woodlands.

Hernandez was awarded a plaque for 30 years of officiating and Rodriguez a plaque and watch marking 25 years of service. Both officials work from the South Texas Chapter, based out of Concan.

The South Texas Chapter covers a large area. Niki Henderson is the game/match assigner for the local portion of the chapter. Rose Bradshaw is president and Mary Fowler is secretary.

Both honorees have worked state volleyball tournaments. Hernandez was the referee in the 2010 tourney held at San Marcos.

Rodriguez works as line judge and like Hernandez, has worked multiple regional tourneys.

Hernandez said it was former Uvalde coach that encouraged him to become a volleyball official. “That was in 1981. I have actually worked 33 years but as far as TASO it is 30 consecutive years.”

“I work a lot of games in Del Rio and Eagle Pass, especially since Eagle Pass now has two high schools,” added Hernandez. “People in our part of the chapter work games in Kerrville, Junction, and southward.”
