Golf tourney winds up tomorrow

Second-day competition in the 70th-annual Uvalde Fourth of July golf tournament will take place today at Uvalde Memorial Golf Course.

Match-play action in the tournament got underway yesterday.

Tomorrow, play in this year’s big summer golfing event will conclude as a new championship flight winner will be crowned and first-place finishers in each of the other flights of the tournament will be determined.

Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of this year’s event.

The Uvalde Leader-News traveling trophy will be awarded to the championship flight winner.

Guy Goodspeed is the defending championship flight winner.

Last year, Goodspeed became the eighth player in the history of the 69-year tourney to win the event three times as he came from behind to win a one-up victory over Mike Hillis in last year’s title match.

After trailing Hillis throughout most of the championship match, Goodspeed won three of the final four holes to clinch the tourney title.

Prior to his win last year, Goodspeed won the tourney title in 2012 and 2013.

Before his win over Hillis, Goodspeed defeated 2015 tourney champion Edward Treviño, 3 and 2, in the semi-final match.
