Four members of the 2017 Uvalde Lobos volleyball team were selected to the District 29-5A All-District team.
Senior libero Cassandra Silva made the All-District first team, senior middle blocker Kayla Curtis made the second team, while juniors Makayla Perez and Deandra Vera both made the honorable mention team.
“When you come into a program and make philopsophical, strategy, and style changes, it can sometimes make the seaosn even more challenging than it really is. But with the great group of hard-working young ladies I had, we were able to make some good strides and progress this year,” said first-year Uvalde High School head volleyball coach Russell McElroy.
“It is exciting to have four of our Lobos recognized with All-District honors for their individual work,” said McElroy. “I am obviously proud of my entire team and program, but it is rewarding and it makes my heart swell to have two of my seniors recognized as they finish their Lobos career, and then to have two of our juniors recognized, as well. That shines positive light on what our future may hold.”
McCollum dominated most of the first-team selections as five players made the team, including outstanding hitter Miranda Rich, outstanding setter Alysia Garcia, and other first teamers Jernee Dimas, Dominique Villarreal, and Cynthia Adan.
Three Southside players made the first team. They are Mia Soto, Allie Herrera, and Lexie Martinez.
Harlandale placed three players on the first-team list, including outstanding setter Adrienne Galaviz, defensive specialist Pamela Sandoval, and Mistue Rodriguez.
Two Floresville players made the first team. They are Shelby Coldeway and Meosha Ervin.
Eagle Pass Winn had one first-teamer in Kayla Cantu.
Other players selected to the second team were Martha Martinez and Annette Jimenez of Eagle Pass Winn, Faith Coldeway and Madelyn Castro of Floresville, Annalissa Aguilar, Aifarah Navarro, and Divianna Rodriguez of Harlandale, Bryanna Rich and Stephanie Garcia of McCollum, and Gabriella Aguilar and Elizabeth Lowe of Southside.
Rounding out the honorable mention list were Skye Perez, Miranda Alderete, and Teresa Gonzales of Harlandale, Heaven Rubio and Alyssa Dimas of McCollum, Naomi Valdez, Kristen Traeger, and Marina Braziel of Southside, Samantha Herrera, Emily Mann, and Mandi Jones of Floresville, and Kimberly Rodriguez, Joana Peña, and Yahaira Ortega of Winn.
Players for the team were nominated for the team and voted on for the team by the district head volleyball coaches.
McCollum won the district volleyball title, Harlandale finished as the runner-up team, Southside placed third in the standings, while Floresville edged Eagle Pass Winn for fourth place, and Uvalde finished in sixth place.
