Field of competition gets smaller for softball, baseball playoffs


Following weekend playoff action, there are eight teams left in contention for state softball honors and 16 teams left in contention for state baseball honors.

This week, the winners of University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region IV softball semi-final playoffs will do battle for the regional softball title, while the winners of quarter-final baseball playoffs will vie in regional semi-final competition.

The Sabinal Lady Jackets were scheduled to wrap up a Class 2A semi-final softball series against the Shiner Comanches yesterday at Seguin.

Those two teams were set to open series play Friday night at Texas Lutheran University.

Results from the series will be reported in Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

The Sabinal-Shiner winner will face series winner of the other semi-final matchup between the Harper Lady Longhorns and the Normangee Panthers.

Harper and Normangee were to complete their best-of-three series at Bastrop yesterday.

Normangee topped Harper, 6-2, in the first game of their series Thursday night.

Yesterday at Bastrop, the series was to conclude.

In Class 5A baseball quarter-final play Thursday at Corpus Christi, the Carroll Tigers edged the Calallen Wildcats in a 2-1 thriller.

Jacob Flores pitched a six-hitter. He struck out six Calallen batters.

Justin Hernandez drove in two Carroll runs.

Brian Juarez hit a home run for Calallen.

The Calallen-Carroll series was scheduled to continue Friday night.

If needed, game three was to be played yesterday afternoon.

The winner of the Calallen-Carroll series will advance to face a regional semi-final contest against the winner of the quarter-final playoff game between the Kerrville Tivy Antlers and the Victoria East Titans.

Tivy and East were to play a single-game playoff Friday at San Antonio.

Friday night at Corpus Christi, the King Mustangs were set to begin their series against the Veterans Memorial Eagles.

The Veterans Memorial-King series was to conclude yesterday.

The King-VM winner now will take on the winner of the quarter-final series between the Boerne Champion Chargers and the Richmond Foster Falcons.

Thursday night, Champion outlasted Foster, 1-0, in a game that went nine innings.

Luke Boyers reached base for Champion on a fielder’s choice in the ninth inning.

Boyers stole second base, moved up to third nase on a Foster error, and scored on single by Michael Gresham.

Chris Weber, Champion’s starting pitcher, struck out 10 batters.

He was replaced by Greshman in the eighth inning when Weber reached his pitch count limit.

Gresham was the winning pitcher. He and Weber combined for a two-hit shutout.

The Chargers managed only three hits.

Friday night, the series at La Grange was scheduled to conclude with the second game and the possibility of a third game.

In Class 5A softball semi-final play, the Richmond Foster Falcons topped the Corpus Christi Calallen Lady Wildats, 2-1, Thursday night.

The series was to wind up yesterday.
