Coyotes picked to finish fourth in the district football race

The Uvalde Coyotes are a pre-season pick to finish fourth in the upcoming District 29-5A football race.

According to the 2017 edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, the Coyotes will place behind Floresville, Eagle Pass Winn, and San Antonio Harlandale, while the Uvaldeans are listed ahead of Southside and San Antonio McCollum.

Uvalde High School’s new head football coach will have 16 lettermen returning from a 7-4 team that lost to Corpus Christi Calallen, 60-7, in Class 5A Division I bi-district playoff competition last November at San Antonio.

The Coyotes lost a 56-53 district thriller in the Honey Bowl last season.

Texas Football’s list of players to watch for the Coyotes in 2017 include Michael Mata, David Rodriguez, Noah Smith, Joshua Sandoval, Matthew Williams, and Josiah Carrizales.

Other top prospects listed are Domingo Davila, Benito Luna, Ryan Talavera, Estevan Encina, Humberto DeLeon, Orlando Castañeda, Ralph Hernandez, and Alberto Garza.

The defending champion Floresville Tigers are picked to repeat as District 29-5A football champions.

Coach Andrew Rohrs lists 24 returning lettermen, including six offensive starters and seven defensive starters, from last year’s 5-6 ball club that lost a 42-21 bi-district playoff decision in Class 5A Division II competition.

Quarterback Darian Mayberry, a sophomore, is among the top returning players for the Tigers.

Floresville and Eagle Pass Winn both posted a 4-1 District 29-5A record last season, but the Tigers topped the Mavericks, 20-16, in head-to-head district competition.

Winn topped the Corpus Christi Carroll Tigers, 21-14, in Class 5A Division I bi-district action.

The Mavericks then posted a 10-6 second-round victory over the Laredo Nixon Tigers, before falling to the Richmond Foster Falcons, 55-0, in the regional semifinals.

Linebacker Ernesto Villaseñor leads a group of 22 returning lettermen from last year’s 10-3 ball club.

Coach Eric Villaseñor’s Mavericks will host Floresville on Nov. 3 in a game that could be for the 2017 district football championship.

Harlandale has a new head coach in former San Antonio Edison head coach Albert Torres, who replaces Harlandale football coaching legend Isaac Martinez.

Following 23 seasons as head football coach at Harlandale, Coach Martinez resigned to accept the sole position of Harlandale ISD athletic director.

Torres inherits 23 returning lettermen from last season’s 4-6 ball club that posted only a 48-41 district win over the McCollum Cowboys in their 2016 season opener.

Coach Ricky Lock’s Southside Cardinals have 14 returning lettermen coming back from a 5-6 ball that lost a 42-6 bi-district verdict to the Flour Bluff Hornets in Class 5A Division I playoff action last season.

Speedy running back Eddie Perez is among the list of top returning players for the Cardinals.

Perez, who rushed for 455 yards and five touchdowns missed much of the 2016 football season because of an injury.

Coach Greg Felux’s McCollum’s Cowboys return 20 lettermen from last year’s 2-8 team.

The Cowboys knocked off the district champion Floresville Tigers, 42-21, in district play at Floresville last season.

Running back Jonathan Handy scored four touchdowns in that football game.

Handy, a McCollum senior this year, tops the list of returning personnel. He totaled 1,025 yards and scored 17 touchdowns last season.
