Leader-News photo contest

Mickey Gerdes pauses before Game 5 of the World Series to take a moment with the Uvalde Leader-News and a photo of his grandfather, Woodrow Ede, who was a big Cubs fan. “When I was little, we would watch the afternoon games on WGN – back before Wrigley had lights – or we would go over the box scores in the Sporting News if we couldn’t catch the games on TV,” Gerdes wrote on Nov. 1. “Back in 2003, I promised him during the NLCS that if our Cubbies won, I would take him to Wrigley to see them in the World Series… My Poppo passed away in 2005, but I kept my promise and took a photo of him in his uniform (he was a Navy Pilot) during WWII with me to Game 5… Together on Sunday at Wrigley, we watched the Cubs win their first World Series game at home since Game 6 of the 1945 World Series.”
