Yolanda J. Lopez
Yolanda J. Lopez, 78, of Uvalde died on Jan. 31, 2019, in San Antonio. She was surrounded by her family.
She was born on Dec. 21, 1940, in Crystal City to Maria (Valero) and Reynaldo Jimenez.
She graduated from Crystal City High School and from then-Incarnate Word College in San Antonio with degrees in medical technology and chemistry. She worked as a certified medical technologist for the 42-year duration of her career.
After retirement, she worked as a volunteer in several capacities in Uvalde, including at El Progreso Memorial Library, and served as a certified catechism teacher at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
The family says she was a hard-working and loving mother and wife who was creative and devoted to her faith. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking and cats. One of her most passionate hobbies was genealogy, of which she became an expert, tracing the Jimenez family roots back to the 1500s.
Lopez is survived by her husband of 55 years, Reyes Lopez of Uvalde; son, Ray Lopez and wife, Stella, of San Antonio; three daughters, Marima Hernandez and husband, Enrique, of Brownsville, Nora Ann Lopez of Austin and Yolanda E. Villalobos of San Antonio; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Dilia Marie Lopez; her parents; older sister, Eliza De Leon; and younger brother, Reynaldo Jimenez.
A visitation was held on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and a rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on both days at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by interment at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery. A reception followed at the American Legion hall.
