Stephen C. Hoag Sr.

Stephen Calvin Hoag Sr., 93, longtime resident of Uvalde, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2018, surrounded by his family at the Isle at Watercrest Dominion, Assisted Living Community in San Antonio.

Mr. Hoag was born on Nov. 26, 1924, in Uvalde to Will and Moselle Hoag. Hoag grew up during his formative years on the Hoag Ranch south of town, near Fort Inge. Hoag dam on the Leona River was built in 1912 and was named after the family.

Hoag graduated from Uvalde High School in 1942 and entered the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged after serving in Panama to protect the canal. He returned to Uvalde in 1947 and married the love of his life, Betty Lou Keele. They were married for 68 years.

Hoag worked over 20 years at the Uvalde Post Office, starting out as a mail carrier and eventually up to the rank of assistant post master. In 1956, he was chosen to drive the horse drawn U.S. Post Office stagecoach in the Uvalde Centennial Parade. After resigning from the Post office, he purchased Plaza Furniture Company on the square and operated it for many years.

He was involved in Uvalde civic affairs serving on the Uvalde Planning Commission, annual decorating of the downtown plaza at Christmas, served as a Director of Uvalde National Bank, and was a member of the Uvalde Rotary Club. He was also a longtime member of the Uvalde Church of Christ where he served the congregation as a deacon and elder.

Hoag is survived by his son Steve Hoag Jr. and wife, Jany, of Waco; daughter Susan Webb and husband, Ronnie, of Boerne; daughter Sandra Voiles and husband, Mike, of Georgetown. He is also survived by six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Funeral Home.
