Ralph F. Boyce
Ralph Frank Boyce, 86, of Utopia died on Aug. 29, 2017, at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1930, in Utopia to Ruth (Haby) and Everette Boyce Sr.
A resident of Utopia since 1930, Boyce was co-owner of Boyce & Davenport Store. In 1994, he sold the business to Morris Killough and retired to his ranch south of Utopia.
He graduated from Utopia High School before being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in Korea and Japan until 1953, and was awarded two Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal for Occupation, Japan.
He was a member of the Utopia United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the board in the 1960s. He served as a member of the Utopia Volunteer Fire Department, the Utopia Park Board and the Utopia Junior Horse Club.
He married Eleanor Jane Blakeney on March 3, 1956, in Uvalde.
He was preceded in death by his father, his mother and step-father, J.C. “Chester” Jackson.
Boyce is survived by his wife of 61 years, of Utopia; two daughters, Jana Bunge and husband, Eric, of Aurora, Colorado, and Jaye Lynn Harper and husband, Quentin, of Gruver, Texas; one brother, Everette Boyce and wife, Katherine, of Utopia; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Utopia United Methodist Church. The Rev. Chuck Crane of the Utopia United Methodist Church and The Rev. Michael Marsh of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church of Uvalde officiated.
His body was donated to the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
