Phyllis F. McNelly

Phyllis Fulenwider McNelly, age 75, passed away in Houston, Texas, on Oct. 29, 2018.

Phyllis was born July 28, 1943, the daughter of Leslie and Dorothy Piper Fulenwider. She is the youngest of their four children; her brothers are Les Jr. (Nooner), Jerry and Ralph. Phyllis is the great-granddaughter of F.A. Piper, founder of F.A. Piper and Co., housed in the Grand Opera House. Piper was instrumental in establishing the railroad in Uvalde and helped settle the town in its early days.

Phyllis graduated from Uvalde High School in 1961, attended Southwest Texas Junior College and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa before graduating with an Associate’s degree. She then attended Sam Houston State University where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority.

In 1964, Phyllis married Bertram McNelly Jr.  They became the proud parents of three daughters, Melissa, Dana and Lara, and resided in Uvalde until 2003. Phyllis was an active member of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Junior Service League, Grand Opera House Arts Council Board, Chamber of Commerce, Middle Rio Grande Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and the American Heart Association, where she earned a Distinguished Service Award during her presidency of the Uvalde County Division.

Phyllis and Bert moved to a beautiful piece of property in the country outside of Burnet, Texas, in 2003 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They became active in Epiphany Episcopal Church in Burnet where Phyllis served on the vestry. She was a volunteer at Seton Highland Lakes hospital, Community Kitchen and Laycare. They moved to Austin in 2017 and joined St. David’s Episcopal Church where they were active in Prime Timers and Arbor Terrace.

Phyllis loved traveling, playing bridge, needlework and reading, but treasured being with her family most of all.

Phyllis is survived by her husband Bert of 54 years, and their daughters, Melissa McNelly of Austin, Dana and Albert Sanchez of Pflugerville, and Lara and Jeff Durbin of Austin, six grandchildren; Isabella and Preston Grossling, Joshua and Jordan Sanchez, Jacob and Matthew Durbin; her brother Ralph and his wife, Diane, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Les Jr. and Jerry.

A memorial service will be held at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Uvalde, Texas, on Nov. 3, 2018, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to MD Anderson Cancer Center, www.mdanderson.org, or Daughter’s of the King at St. Philips Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, 343 N.
