She was born on May 26, 1929, in Austin to Bessie (Dye) and R.T. Spaw.

She married James Patterson in 1949 in Austin. He preceded her in death in 1965. The family says after his death she worked hard to raise the couple’s five children.

The family remembers her frequently admonishing them regarding brotherly kindness; and say her greatest achievement was teaching her children to love each other, and the Lord, through all circumstances. One of her favorite bible verses which she often cited was 1 Peter 4:8, “Above everything, love one another earnestly, because love covers over many sins.”

Patterson is survived by one son, James Neal Patterson of Huntsville; four daughters, Janie Riddle and husband, Ted, of Catoosa, Oklahoma, Lois Milstead and husband, William, of Normangee, Betty Meyer and husband, Carlos Edward “Sandy” Meyer of Uvalde and Rose Lyddon and husband, Charles, of Oakwood; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, church family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Tommy Spaw and Johnnie Spaw; two sisters, Virginia Kane and Nellie Hill; and stepson, Blaine Schwab.

A celebration of life was held yesterday at 1:30 p.m. at Austin-Peel & Son Funeral Home of Austin, followed by interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
