Maria “Socorro” Hernandez, 86, of Uvalde died on May 17, 2020, at her residence in Uvalde.

Visitation began yesterday at 4 p.m. with a rosary recitation at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. Another rosary recitation will be held today at 7 p.m.

A funeral mass will take place tomorrow 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment following at Hillcrest Cemetery. Condolences may be left online at www.rekfunerals.com.

Hernandez was born on Nov. 21, 1933, in Sabinal to Tomasa (Flores) and Salome De La Cruz.

She married Narcisco P. Hernandez on June 4, 1960, in Sabinal.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years of Uvalde; daughter, Dora Gonzalez of Uvalde; son, Roland Hernandez of San Antonio; sister, Camilia Ramirez of San Antonio; brother, Antonio De La Cruz of Sabinal; four grandchildren, Alanys Gonzalez and companion, Abraham Martinez, of Uvalde, Briana Garza and husband, Alex Joe, of Fort Hood, Desiree Hernandez and companion, Thomas J. Gilliam, of San Saba, and Melissa Hernandez of Pearsall; seven great-grandchildren, Alex Joe Garza Jr., Aneveah N. Martinez, Anjali C. Martinez, Hailey Jean Gilliam, Lillian Grace Gilliam, Thomas James Gilliam IV and Rasten Lane Herd; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by both parents; two daughters, Rosa Hernandez and Silvia Hernandez; sister, Emilia Ortega; son-in-law, Gilbert Rodrick “Rod” Gonzalez; and great-grandchild, Robert Rodrick Garza.

Pallbearers will be Alex Joe Garza Sr., Abraham Martinez, Thomas James Gilliam IV, Manuel Chapa Jr., Randy Ortega, Richard Ortega, Albert Barra, John Jay Cano and Atticus Villescaz.

Honorary pallbearers will be the late Gilbert Rodrick “Rod” Gonzalez, Jesse Rios and Alex Joe Garza Jr.
