Jerry D. Wagnon Sr.

Jerry D. Wagnon Sr.

Jerry David Wagnon Sr. passed away on Monday, July 17, at home surrounded by his family.

Jerry was born in Pensacola, Florida on January 18, 1942. He attended Corpus Christi W. B. Ray High School, from which he graduated in 1960.

Jerry was always extremely proud of achieving the Boy Scouts of America’s rank of Silver Eagle Scout – “Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle” – and also being accepted into The Order of the Arrow. Additionally, he was one of the remarkable few to achieve the status of Explorer Scout.

Jerry was a running back on the Ray 1959 state championship football team, coached by the legendary Bill Stages. Many of his teammates became his friends for life, and their reunions to revisit their glory days were among his favorite memories. He went on to play football at Angelo State.

It was at Ray that Jerry met the one and only love of his life, Barbara Kay Reagor. Their love story spanned nearly six decades, having just recently celebrated their 57th anniversary. They married in 1960, moved to San Antonio and started their family. They would not remain there long, briefly relocating to Bogota, Columbia, where Jerry worked for Petty Geophysical.

Upon returning from South America to Texas, they relocated to Uvalde, Texas, where Jerry became a rancher, raising Santa Gertrudis cattle, while also working as an independent contractor laying cable for Southwestern Bell.

Upon their children’s graduation from Uvalde High School, Jerry and Barbara continued their adventure together, making Hawaii their home for ten of the happiest years of their lives. Following their tropical island sojourn, they returned to Texas, where they finally settled in Houston.

Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved brother Benjamin Reuben Wagnon, on July 2, 2005. He is survived by his adored wife, Barbara Kay Reagor Wagnon; their son, Jerry David Wagnon Jr. and his wife, Danette; their son, Robert Wagnon and his wife, Ellen; their daughter, Jennifer Wagnon Ham and her husband, Dwayne; and West Villasana and his wife, Meredith; their grandchildren, Jacqueline, David, Dacia, Julia and Joy Wagnon; Reagor, Joseph and Bennett Wagnon; Kaleb Ham and his wife, Mandy, and their son, Kasen, Rachel, Joshua and Fayth Ham; and Caitlyn Villasana; and Wanda Wagnon, his favorite sister-in-law.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Lynn Conopio, Vanessa Voss and Leona Thomas for their loving and tireless care of Mr. Fantastic during his illness.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Uvalde, Texas, with burial to follow at the W5 Ranches, Route HC 34 on Highway 117, 15 miles south of Uvalde. A reception will follow interment.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jerry can be made to Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children in San Antonio, www.sunshinecottage.org; or St. Philip’s Episcopal Day School, 343 N. Getty St., Uvalde, TX 78801; or the charity of one’s choice.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, July 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the home of Ellen and Robert Wagnon at 2328 Underwood, Houston, TX, 77030.

The preceding is a paid obituary.
