Janis R. Clary

Janis “Jan” Rae Clary, 90, of Sabinal died on Dec. 13, 2018, in Hondo.

She was born on Jan. 15, 1928, in Houston to Frances Ellen (Goodrich) and C.E. Jackson. Her family later moved to San Antonio, where she graduated from Jefferson High School.

While attending Trinity University, she met her future husband, the late Robert “Bob” Allen Clary Jr. The two were married 49 years and made their life on their farm east of Sabinal.

A resident of the area for over seven decades, Clary retired from Sabinal Independent School District after teaching second grade for 23 years. She was an active member of her community, and of the Sabinal Methodist Church. She enjoyed card games and traveling. The family says she had a lifetime of love which produced four children, many grandchildren and step-grandchildren, and even six great-grandchildren.

Clary is survived by three sons, Austin Allen Clary of Sabinal, Milton Rae Clary and wife, Karen, of Fairfax, Virginia, and Kenneth Robert Clary  and wife, Stephanie, of D’Hanis; daughter, Frances Ellen Clary Owen  and husband, John, of Katy; six grandchildren, Robert Allen Clary III of Los Angeles, California, Ashley Dee Clary-Carpenter and husband, Mike, and Emily Rae Clary Morlandt and husband, Michael, all of San Antonio, John Henry Owen IV and wife, Elizabeth of Katy, Rachel Lauren Clary Nichols and husband, Chad, of Denver, Colorado, and Trevor Scott Owen of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; six great-grandchildren, Addison Estelle Owen, Kaiya Rae Owen, Anika Mae Owen, Cara Dee Carpenter, Maya Mae Carpenter and Leo William Nichols; four nieces, Karen Jane Marx, Catherine Ann Jackson, Theresa Rae Kauther and Janet Carol Taylor; numerous step-grandchildren and other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; parents-in-law,  Lois (Nance) and Robert Allen Clary; brother, Norval Eugene Jackson; and grandson, John Kyle Clary.

Funeral services were held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Rushing Estes Knowles Chapel in Sabinal. Interment followed at Sabinal Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Allen Clary, John Owen, Trevor Owen, Mike Carpenter, Michael Morlandt and Chad Nichols.
