Irene Lara Ortiz, 65, of Uvalde died on March 18, 2018, in Uvalde.

A mass of Christian burial will be held today at 2 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at a later date.

She was born on June 28, 1952, in Mexico to Belia Hernandez de Hernandez and Jose de Jose Lara.

The family later moved to, and resided in, Uvalde.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and son, Ruben L. Ortiz.

The family says she was an activist for human rights at heart, and was very involved in the community of Uvalde for many years; Ortiz participated in the march for school equality in Uvalde.When she was not helping the community, she enjoyed spending time with family. She befriended everyone she met.

Ortiz is survived by her husband of 16 years, Rolando Herrera of Uvalde; three daughters, Teresa Molina and husband, Pat, and Jennifer Magana and husband, Javier, all of Uvalde, and Leticia Pough and husband, Robert, of Thomson, Georgia; four sons, Jose Ricardo L. Ortiz, and companion, James Hanna, Jesus A.  Ibarra and wife, Brenda S., and Juan A. Ibarra and wife, Angel, all of Uvalde, and Greg Herrera Jr. and wife, Tina, of Fort Worth; sister; Amelia Carter of San Antonio; 22 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

A visitation was held yesterday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and a rosary will be recited in the chapel at 7 p.m., both at Hillcrest Memorial Funeral Home, located at 424 Geraldine Street in Uvalde.

Pallbearers will be Pedro Marigal Jr., Jason Sanchez, Jeremiah Ibarra, Santos Rivas, Conrad Flores and Johnny Flores.
