Grace L. Sansom

Heaven must’ve needed more Grace and indeed received it when Grace Lillian Ward Sansom crossed over Jordan into her Promised Land. She died after a brief illness in Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Austin on Oct. 9, 2017.

Grace was born on Jan. 21, 1932, to Lula May and Joseph Nathan Ward in Yancey, Texas, the last of

five children.

She was married for 60 years to Ira Toler Sansom, and they had four children.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; brothers Robert, Floyd and Walter Ward; sister Florine Faseler; and son Billy.

She is survived by her children, Ira Jr. (Judy), Lucy (Ed Mayberry), and Joe (Debi); grandchildren, Tres and Phillip Sansom and Natalie Sansom-Sidoti, Christopher Newsom, Clint and Jake Sansom, and Amber Lozano; and 14 great-grandchildren (as Ira T was fond of saying, “Look how many pieces we broke into!”);and many nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and fellow church members.

Grace’s secretarial career bookended bearing and raising their children. She was a loving and devoted wife and an enthusiastic supporter of all the kids’ sports, recitals and other school events and was so proud of her family in general. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, attending morning and evening services and midweek prayer meetings. If the doors were open, Grace was in her pew. She was famous for her homemade pecan pies, providing a steady supply for any church covered-dish gathering.

A celebration of her life will be held today at First Baptist Church at 1 p.m., with burial immediately following in Yancey Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Phillip, Clint and Jake Sansom, and Chris Newsom, and grandsons-in-law Joe Sidoti and Philip Lozano. Firstborn grandson Tres Sansom will take part in the order of service.

Memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church, 200 N. High St., Uvalde, TX 78801.

The preceding is a paid obituary.
