Gerald W. Mayes

Gerald Wayne Mayes of Brackettville, Texas, was born July 20, 1938, to Henry Clay Mayes and Rubelle Avril (Thomas) Mayes.

Gerald passed away peacefully on Feb. 16, 2019, at the age of 80 in Retama Manor Nursing Home, Pleasanton, Texas.

He married Opalee M. Burrier, Sept. 19, 1959.

Gerald loved sports, playing his guitar as well as playing with one of the best bands in South Texas for 13 years. He was an avid reader of history, especially Texas history, and the Texas Rangers. Gerald was a member of the Uvalde Sheriff’s Reserve for many years.

Other hobbies included hunting, fishing, guns, knives, collecting arrowheads, John Wayne memorabilia, and being a fan of old western movies. He made the best barbecued chicken ever, and loved his dog Cuddles.

Gerald is survived by his wife Opalee Mayes of 60 years, son, DeWayne Mayes, wife (Bonnie) of Corpus Christi, daughter, Melody Montgomery, husband (Greg) of Del Rio, grandchildren Jason Montgomery, wife (Maritza) of Bastrop, Whitney Montgomery of Del Rio, Guy Rigby, wife (Tiffany) of Corpus Christi, Brandon Baxter of Uvalde, Jennifer Rendon, husband (Robert) of Corpus Christi, great-grandchildren, Belle Montgomery, Kaydence Rigby, Madison, Wyatt, and Jase Rendon. Also brother, Carl Mayes, wife (Maxine), sister, Carole Dooley, husband (Charles), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be at Hurley Funeral Home tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 22, 2019, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Pleasanton, Texas.

Graveside services will be held at Rutledge Cemetery, in Poteet, Texas, Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, 11 a.m., Poteet, Texas.
