Francisco Olivarez Jr.
Francisco Olivarez Jr., 66, of Uvalde died on Sept. 26, 2017, at Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital in San Antonio.
A rosary was recited yesterday and will be recited again today at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.
A funeral mass will beheld tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
He was born on Oct. 13, 1950, in Uvalde to Bessie Mae (Perkins) and Francisco Olivarez.
He married Teodora Flores on June 5, 1999, in Uvalde.
Olivarez served in combat as a U.S. Marine, stationed in Vietnam, where he earned several medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Purple Heart. He also served as a helicopter instructor in Iran. Military ranks he held included gunnery sergeant, corporal and warrant officer. The family says the discipline and patriotism he obtained while serving in the U.S. Marines encompassed his life. Olivarez was also employed as a math teacher at the Hondo Independent School District.
The family says Olivarez was a generous, family-oriented man who helped those in need, and he will be missed. The family says he had a strong faith in God which guided his actions throughout his life.
Olivarez is survived by his wife of 18 years, of Uvalde; four daughters, Elsa Rincones and Sandra Rincones, both of Uvalde, Tammie Olivarez of California and Jessica Arriola Olivarez of Texas; two sons, Fernando Rincones and Rafael Rincones; one sister, Juanita Olivarez; and two brothers, Hector Olivarez and John McDonald, all of Uvalde; and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be Fernando Rincones, Rafael Rincones, Gail Rincones, Trinity Arriola, Isaiah Arriola, John Anthony Olivarez, Nina Gomez, Hector Olivarez and Hector Sosa.
Honorary pallbearers will be John McDonald, James McDonald, Inez Guevara and Inez Guevara Jr.
