Elia Edna Hernandez, 77, of Uvalde died on July 25, 2017, at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio.
A rosary was recited yesterday and will be recited again today at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.
A funeral mass will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
She was born on March 14, 1940, in La Pryor to Maria (Guajardo) and Eliseo Garcia.
She married Felix G. Hernandez on Dec. 5, 1959, in Uvalde.
Hernandez worked for the Uvalde Consolidated School District as a teacher for more than 30 years. After retirement she worked with the adult literacy program at the correctional center in Uvalde. For the past several years she served as a volunteer at the Uvalde Memorial Hospital, along with various other organizations.
She is survived by one daughter, Velma Hernandez Henry and husband, Rick, of Austin; two sons, Leroy Hernandez and wife, Marilyn, of Denver, Colorado, and Michael Hernandez and wife, Azenette, of San Antonio; one sister, Elva G. Ibarra of Uvalde; one brother, Guillermo Garcia of Uvalde; five grandchildren, Alyssa Hernandez, Sarah Hernandez, Ashley Hernandez, Kathryn Hernandez and Casey Henry and wife, Kelsey; two great-grandchildren, Kaelyn Henry and Cooper Henry; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters, Susana Enriquez and Minerva Torres; and two brothers, Esequiel Garcia and Benito Garcia.
Pallbearers will be Robert Hernandez, Ruben Hernandez, Willie Garcia Jr., Moses Hernandez, Joe Ibarra Jr. and Casey Henry.
Memorial donations in her honor may be made to the St. Henry de Oso Family Project, 114 E. Nopal, Uvalde, TX 78801.
