Duane Crawford

Duane Crawford

Duane Crawford, 86, of Utopia died on July 22, 2018, at his residence.

He was born on March 2, 1932, in Oberlin, Kansas, to Avis (Chance) and Burney Crawford. He was the firstborn of four children. The family later moved to Texas.

In 1947, the family says he met the love of his life, Betty Jo Dawson, in Kingsville. They married in 1950, and the couple had four children.

He lived and worked in Kingsville for 37 years before the couple retired to Utopia in 1987. He then lived in Utopia for 31 years.

His large family was the greatest joy of his life; he treasured every picture of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He rejoiced with the birth of every new great-grandchild and looked forward to holding each baby.

He was an avid outdoorsman and gun collector who enjoyed hunting and shooting skeet. He loved storytelling and had a knack for remembering details. Music played a big part in his life. Jim Reeves, Elvis and many classic songs of his day could be heard playing throughout his home.

He loved the Hill Country, the Sabinal River and wildlife. The family says he continued to feed deer and hummingbirds from his front door until his last day. He often sent pictures of local wildlife to his family. The family says he found great peace in watching God’s creation from his front porch; he had a deep love for God’s Word and he faithfully spent every morning outside reading the Bible and drinking coffee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, and two brothers, Leon Crawford and Kenny Crawford.

He is survived by four children, Kathy Harrison and husband, David, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Burney Crawford and wife, Joyce, of Kansas, Margaret Thompson and husband, Mike, of Uvalde, and LaVerne Gerwick and husband, Mike, of Utopia; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and sister, Ora Dell McMahon of Horseshoe Bay.

A private family celebration of life will be held in Utopia.

Memorial donations made be made in his honor to the American Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.org, or The First Baptist Church of Utopia, P.O. Box 119, Utopia TX 78884.
