Barbara S. Brewer
Barbara Sue (Kimble) Brewer, of Rockwall, Texas, passed away at the age of 79 on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017.
She was born June 29, 1938, in Paden City, West Virginia, to parents John L. and Mary Frances (Leasure) Kimble.
Barbara was a member of Eastridge Church of Christ in Rockwall. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family.
Barbara was 4 when her father moved the family to Texas to join his two brothers, Paul and Ace. Her father worked in the oil fields of South Texas. The family lived in Carrizo Springs until Barbara’s high school years.
The family moved to Uvalde in 1951. Barbara played clarinet in the high school band, was involved in various clubs and activities and was active in her church.
After high school she attended Southwest Texas State College and graduated in 1960, with a Bachelor of Science in education. During her senior year, Barbara met her future husband, Bob Brewer, at Garner State Park. Bob was in the U.S. Air Force and stationed in Del Rio. After a short courtship, they married in July 1960.
Barbara began her teaching career in Del Rio and had her first child, Steve, in 1962. The family moved to California in 1964, and her second child, Kimberly, was born in 1965. Barbara enjoyed several years as a stay-at-home mom and 11 years of happily married life before her husband’s untimely death in 1971. After his death, Barbara and her children moved to Uvalde to be near her parents.
In Uvalde, Barbara returned to her teaching career and was an elementary school teacher for 31 years. During that time, she attended graduate school in the evenings and earned a master’s degree in education from Sul Ross State University in 1976. When Barbara retired from teaching she moved, with her mother, to Dallas, Texas, to be near her children and grandchildren. She lived with and cared for her mother until her death in 2006.
She loved traveling, gardening, decorating and spending time with her family and many friends from church. Barbara was also a member of and former officer of Delta Kappa Gamma and was active in the Texas Retired Teachers Association.
Barbara is survived by her children: Steve Brewer and Kimberly Robinson; her son-in-law, Jeff Robinson; grandchildren: Austin and Ashley Robinson and Carson, Riley and Weston Brewer; brother, John Kimble; four brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews along with a host of loving relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017, at Rest Haven Funeral Home – Rockwall Chapel with Ministers James Hawk and Jason Reeves officiating.
Interment will be held today, Oct. 26, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery in Uvalde, Texas.
The family received friends at the funeral home prior to the service Tuesday, beginning at 3 p.m.
