Anita Chapoy Garcia,  90, of Uvalde died on March 19, 2018, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.

She was born on Sept. 13, 1927, in Del Rio to Adela (Losoya) and James Chapoy.

She married Adrian Garcia on April 30, 1954, in Del Rio.

She grew up in Del Rio with four brothers and four sisters. She was a graduate of Del Rio High School, where she was an active member of the Girl Scouts and Sigma Phi Honor Society, and she was offered an academic scholarship to East Texas Baptist University in Marshall but did not attend.

While living in Del Rio, she worked for several years doing research for the Bilingual Education Program at the University of Michigan.

Later the couple moved to the Abilene area, and for 14 years Garcia was a dedicated teacher for 3-year-olds enrolled in the Abilene Independent School District’s early childhood Home-Start Program.

Though Garcia had been unable to attend college after her high school graduation, as a mature adult she attended and graduated from Cisco Junior College. She made the president’s list each semester, graduated with honors and was named outstanding student in the field of education. She was then offered a scholarship to attend Tarleton State University, but chose not to attend.

The family says Garcia’s greatest joy came from serving the Lord and she did so gladly for over 70 years. She was a member of Iglesia Bautista Unida of Uvalde and deeply loved the ladies who came to her home every week for the Thursday Bible and Crafts Club.

Garcia is survived by four children, James Garcia of Keller, Lillian Newport and husband, David, and Ruth Roman and husband, John, all of El Paso, and Linda Contreras and husband, Carlos, of Uvalde; seven grandchildren, David A. Newport, Kellie Newport, Sarah Herndon and husband, Spencer, Dante Contreras, Jonathan Roman and wife, Stacie, Michaela Roman and James Roman and wife, Valerie; one great-granddaughter, Ellie Rose Roman; two sisters, Azeneth Dominguez of San Angelo and Adela Brown of Warner Robins, Georgia; sister-in-law Hope Chapoy of San Antonio; as well as numerous other relatives from Uvalde, Del Rio, San Antonio and California; and many cherished friends.
