Woman dies after shootout with deputy

A Real County Sheriff’s Office deputy fatally shot a 30-year-old woman after the woman discharged a weapon at the deputy during a domestic disturbance call.

Deputy Jonathan Ortiz, who was previously employed at the Uvalde County Jail, was dispatched to the Hill Country Motel in Camp Wood early Tuesday morning for a report of a domestic disturbance involving the custody of a minor child.

According to the Real County Sheriff’s office, an unidentified caller said Shana Musquiz was attempting to take Musquiz’s brother’s 4-year-old son.

According to Sheriff Nathan T. Johnson, Ortiz informed Musquiz she would have to relinquish the child back to her brother because she did not have custody of the child.

Shana Musquiz obtained a firearm from her motor vehicle and discharged a round at the deputy and others standing in the immediate vicinity,” Johnson said.

Ortiz returned fire and shot Musquiz, who was taken by Nueces Canyon EMS to Uvalde Memorial Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
