Valentine’s Day was extra sweet for 3-year-old Kelum Vazquez, who was treated to a surprise visit from his parents on Friday afternoon, after their near eight-month deployment in South Korea.
The reunion took place at the Southwest Texas Junior College Powers & Kirchner Daycare, where Army soldiers Elissa Rosas Vazquez and Oviguel Vazquez were greeted by a hallway full of toddlers holding American flags. Once Kelum saw his family, he had several tearful hugs, switching between his mother and father.
During their deployment, Kelum has been staying with his grandmother and La Pryor resident Jessica Rosas.
“It’s been hard,” Rosas said. “We’ve missed them a lot.” Rosas is a mother of five, and her children range in age from nine to 27 years.
She added that while the family was in South Korea, they tried to talk on the phone at least every other day if not every day.
However, with the time change, it’s been challenging.
When asked how they will celebrate Valentine’s evening, Elissa said they just wanted to be with their family.
They are stationed at Fort Hood in Kileen.
