Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department, Neutze lauded for contributions

by Julye Keeble, staff writer

A local businessman who gives back to Uvalde, and a group of volunteers who have saved countless lives were honored Friday night when the Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated 100 years of service with a dinner and awards ceremony, having opened its doors in 1920.

Surprise guest speakers Uvalde-born Matthew McConaughey and his brother, Mike “Rooster” McConaughey and their mother, Kay, delighted the crown with anecdotes from their time in Uvalde.

Local businessman Jimmy Neutze was named Uvaldean of the Year, while the entire Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department was recognized as volunteer of the year.

The awards were given at the Uvalde County Event Center at the Fairplex. The theme for the black tie optional formal event was “Through The Decades.”
