Before San Jose, California-based author Dave Gutierrez put pen to paper he said his ultimate goal for “Patriots from the Barrio” was a film adaptation that would show the world the positive contribution made by Mexican Americans during World War II.

Now, Gutierrez is one step closer to realizing that dream. Hollywood actor and producer Wilmer Valderrama has obtained film rights to Gutierrez’s book, a true story of a Mexican American combat unit that included Guillermo “Willie” De Leon of Uvalde.

“Patriots from the Barrio” was released in September of 2014.

Gutierrez said he was inspired to pursue the project when he began researching his relative, Ramos G. Gutierrez, from Del Rio, who served in the 36th Division.
