Third, fourth COVID-19 cases announced for Uvalde County

Two more cases of COVID-19 have been identified in Uvalde County, as per statistics reported on the website maintained by Uvalde health authority Dr. Jared Reading.

The two additional cases, who have been in self quarantine for approximately a week, involve of a woman from Knippa who is believed to have traveled to Austin, and a male correctional officer who had contact with the second case of coronavirus diagnosed in Uvalde, also a correctional officer at the Uvalde County Jail.

Reading is expected to release a statement later today with more information. No press conference will be held to avoid endangering people, said Uvalde County Judge Bill Mitchell.
Sheriff Charles Mendeke said the jail is still open, and his main focus is on protecting community members, his employees and the inmates.

“We continue to operate with precautions in place. We are going to protect our community,” Mendeke said, adding that the jail is a clean facility that is being sanitized regularly.

The sheriff said similar to the first officer, the second man also called in and said he was feeling ill, and he was immediately told to stay home.

After closing the jail to visitors on March 13, Mendeke began requiring anyone seeking admittance to the jail to have his temperature taken, and all employees and inmates are being closely monitored.

All officials continue to stress the importance of avoiding social gatherings, staying home whenever possible, practicing good hygiene, and maintaining a minimum 6 foot space of social distancing when out.
