Justin Mariscal learned a lot working alongside his father at the Uvalde Volunteer Fire Department. That knowledge, along with his physical strength, was put to the test when the 26-year-old signed up for the San Antonio Fire Department training academy. He graduated on March 3.

Mariscal is the son of LeeAnn and Mario Ortiz. He is a 2009 graduate of Uvalde High School and attended Texas A&M International University in Laredo.

“During the time I was going to school in Laredo, my father was volunteering as a member of the Uvalde fire department. When I would come home during weekend and holiday breaks I would see a lot of the things that he did to help the community. I idolized him for what he did and the things he was willing to do,” Mariscal said.
