How many gallons of sweat does it take to produce a few tears? Uvalde High School’s two-time state wrestling champion Adelyhda Perez has no clue, but she shed a few tears Saturday when the referee raised her arm after she bested Frisco Liberty student Ashley Cook, 7-3, at the Berry Center in Cypress to claim the 2018 crown.

Disappointed after losing in the University Interscholastic League Class 5A state championship match last year, she went to work immediately and all the sweat and hard work paid off.

“I had butterflies,” she explained, “and I’m thinking, I have to do this for myself to overcome the disappointment of last season. It was an awesome feeling when they raised my hand, and I never cry, but I teared up a little bit.”
