Metal detectors, bag checks set for football

Fans of Coyote football may want to consider arriving at the Honey Bowl earlier than usual tomorrow night for this year’s inaugural game. Uvalde High School will implement increased security measures for the contest, which will pit the Coyotes against the Eagle Pass Eagles.

Those entering the stands on the home side will walk through metal detectors and have their bags checked for prohibited items such as weapons and fireworks. Those on the visitors’ side will be subject to a security wand.

Large bags such as backpacks are discouraged.

Anyone who refuses to participate in the screening process will not be allowed to enter the stadium. Those who are unable to walk through a metal detector should notify security, who will accommodate the need.

The metal detectors were first in use at the Honey Bowl for graduation ceremonies in May. They were also in use at Maroon Madness, the parade and pep rally staged Friday to celebrate the beginning of the new school year and the start of football season.

“Bringing on a police force now allows us the manpower to implement more security measures,” said Anne Marie Espinoza, director of communications and marketing for Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District.

There are no plans for additional security measures elsewhere such as at the Harvey Kinchlow gym during basketball season. Any event which takes place at the Honey Bowl will have these measures in place.

“As of right now, we’re focusing on the Honey Bowl,” said Espinoza. “We will continue this through the football season.”

Espinoza noted that community response both at graduation and Maroon Madness was positive.

“We have had a very accepting response from our attendees,” she said. “It’s been very well-received.”

Kick-off for varsity home games this season is at 7:30 p.m.; stadium doors will open at 6 p.m. Junior-varsity kick-off is at 5:30 p.m., with doors opening at 4 p.m.
