Donning an array of high heels, Southwest Texas Junior College students took a stand against domestic violence last week when they participated in Walk a Mile in her Shoes – Men’s March against Domestic Violence.

Dozens of students participated in the event. During the race, David Cobos, Jason Cortez and Xochil Vargas placed first, second and third, respectively.

Cobos won a $25 gift card to Subway, while Cortez won a $15 gift card to Whataburger. Vargas won a $10 gift certificate for Dairy Queen.

The race was held at the campus, with many students standing on the sidelines to show their support for participants. The event, which has been held annually since 2016, is organized by the office of student activities.

“I chose to participate because I am against domestic violence against women. It is just a really bad situation; how guys think it is OK to hit women,” Cobos said, noting that many women don’t feel comfortable reporting abuse.
