Man, dog escape home fire

Sunny, a yellow labrador, is credited with waking his sleeping owner and alerting the 75-year-old man to a developing house fire.

The duo made it safely out of the home and walked to a neighbor’s house to phone help.

Sabinal and Uvalde volunteer fire departments were dispatched at approximately 5:11 a.m. to 985 Private Road 3320, the location of the double-wide manufactured home. The home is located between Sabinal and Concan.

Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office and Alamo Area Ambulance were also called to the scene.

Sabinal Volunteer Fire Department utilized one pumper truck, a tanker and 10 firemen, while UVFD responded with one pumper truck, a tanker and six firemen.

The homeowner was taken by Alamo Area Ambulance to Uvalde Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for smoke inhalation.

“His dog, Sunny, didn’t want to leave his side,” said Sabinal firefighter Amanda Schmidt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The home was completely destroyed.
