The upcoming holidays will be a busy time for the Uvalde Main Street program, as they help with the Shop Small Saturday campaign, host and judge a holiday decoration contest, and prepare for their Feliz Navidad Four Square Friday.
The Main Street program invites shoppers to join them in downtown Uvalde this Saturday for Shop Small Saturday. The downtown stores will feature new merchandise and deals and host giveaways for the occasion.
“Shop in style and give the gift of Uvalde this holiday season. Shopping locally is a gift all on its own, and you can spread the holiday cheer by encouraging others to shop local too,” said Susan Rios, Main Street Uvalde manager. “Not only does shopping locally inspire unique, one-of-a-kind gift giving, but it also supports our local economy more than shopping at a big box or chain would,” she continued.
Small Business Saturday, a shop local campaign, was created in 2010 on the Saturday after Thanksgiving by credit card company American Express. It is intended to promote local businesses during the holiday season.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses donate 250 percent more than larger businesses to non-profits and community causes, and approximately $68 of every $100 spent at local businesses stays within the local economy. Local retailers are also more likely to hire locally than retail chains.
In 2017, the eighth year for the campaign, 108 million consumers reported shopping or dining with local retailers, and they spent approximately $12.9 billion across the nation.
The Main Street program encourages all the businesses in the downtown Main Street district to decorate their businesses for the holiday season.
They suggest decorations be festive and attempt to exemplify the Christmas spirit. Decor may include, but is not limited to, twinkle lights, hanging garland, trees, and etc.
There is no form to fill out to enter, as every decked out building will be viewed and judged by a secret panel of non-Uvalde judges starting on Dec. 5.
The winner will be announced by Dec. 12 and will be awarded a trophy for being the best decorated business.
Four Square Friday
Friday, Dec. 13 is the Feliz Navidad Four Square Friday event. Rios says Main Street Uvalde has hired the White Horse and Carriage Company of San Antonio to return again this year to offer horse-drawn carriage rides that night. The company will be bringing one limo carriage, which can hold up to six adult riders.
Rides will be offered from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and each ride is expected to last about 10 minutes. Tickets will be sold to help cover a portion of the cost, but the ticket price has not been determined.
