Several local non-profit organizations will be participating in the annual Big Give on Thursday, aiming to rouse community support into fundraising results.
The Big Give is 24 hours of online giving, taking place from midnight to midnight, at thebiggivesa.org.
The goal and motivation for the event, as explained on the Big Give SA website, “is to support local non profits that are committed to making South Central Texas a great place to live, work and play.
“Giving is contagious, and by creating an entire event dedicated to supporting our local non profits via social sharing, we can come together as a community and encourage friends and family to give to the causes we the love most.”
In order for a non-profit to participate in this event, they must be IRS approved and compliant 501(c)(3) organizations located in Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, Real, Uvalde and Wilson Counties. Participating organizations in Uvalde County include the Humane Society of Uvalde, El Progreso Memorial Library, Friends of Garner in Concan, Keep Utopia Beautiful, Sabinal Canyon Senior Council Foundation in Utopia, and Friends of the Library Association of Leakey.
The Big Give states that in 2018, 39 percent of all donations made through this event came from first-time donors.
Some entities, including Leader-News, will have booths set up at the library, where donations can be made directly.
The Big Give encourages “anyone and everyone to donate to the nonprofit of their choice.”
All donations made through the Big Give are eligible for a tax deduction. There is a minimum donation amount of $10.
Earnings from last year’s event included $11,740 for Keep Utopia Beautiful, $2,865 for the Humane Society of Uvalde, and $2,246 for the Sabinal Canyon Senior Council Foundation.
In celebration, El Progreso Memorial Library is concurrently hosting a Fiesta of Funding in the library rotunda, reference area, and children’s room beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The party will include performances by the Folklorico de Armor and Mariachi Los Vaqueros. Also slated is a lotería game, with Mayor Don McLauglin as the official caller.
There will also be a grito contest, a piñata, and light refreshments. The library will be accepting donations of $5 per adult and $10 per family at the door.
