Harris running in Greek legend

Follows route of original marathon

Charley Robinson

Staff writer

There are renowned marathons – Boston, Tokyo, London – and then there are other marathons. But there is only one original marathon and that occurred 2,500 years ago.

The Athens Classic Marathon is like no other on earth. According to legend, it covers the same ground that the Athenian messenger Pheidippides ran when he brought the news of victory from the battlefield of Marathon many years ago.

On Sunday, former Uvaldean Randy Harris will trod the same 26.2 miles that Pheidippides covered when he takes part in the Athens Marathon.

Runners need not only qualify for the Athens event, but they must also be invited. Harris received his invitation after the Houston Marathon.
