A collision between a tractor-trailer and a car Wednesday around 5 p.m. caused three people to be sent to the hospital for treatment and damaged a local restaurant.
A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper and a Uvalde Police Department investigator were at the scene continuing to investigate the cause of the crash on Friday morning, according to UPD Lt. Mariano Pargas Jr.
Preliminary findings, according to Lt. Pargas, indicate that the 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound in the 1200 block of U.S. Highway 90, when for an unknown reason it crossed the dividing line. Police believe the car was westbound on 90 and the driver saw the large truck crossing the center line. Police believe the car driver tried to turn away in an attempt to evade a collision.
The two vehicles collided at the intersection of Highway 90 and Farm to Market Road 481, before both crashed into the covered parking area at Ofelia’s Mexican Restaurant, located at 1296 W. Main St.
The 18-wheeler hit the east side of the parking area and caused damage to the structure, removing tin from the roof.
The car’s driver was airlifted to University Hospital, and the passenger was taken to Uvalde Memorial Hospital. The 52-year-old driver of the 18-wheeler was also taken to UMH.
