Couple, longtime teachers set to retire

For husband and wife teaching duo Juan and Sylvia Munoz, the approaching summer break is bittersweet. 

In three short weeks, the couple is beginning a new chapter as retirees, ending 84 combined years of service at Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District.

High school sweethearts, Sylvia and Juan Munoz have a lot in common. Both were raised in Uvalde by grandparents,  both graduated from Uvalde High School. He was in the class of 1968, she was  in the class of 1969, and they have been married 49 years.

They both attended Texas State University in San Marcos.

She always wanted to be a teacher, he wanted to be a biologist.

After college she went straight into teaching, he worked for the Fish and Wildlife department, for four years before working at UCISD.

He continued to work for 17  more years for the fish and wildlife department part-time while teaching.
