City opens doors to hurricane evacuees

City officials on Friday opened shelters to coastal residents fleeing the wrath of a strengthening Hurricane Harvey.

Doors at the Willie De Leon Civic Center were opened at 2 p.m. and were scheduled to remain open until tomorrow. Pets were not allowed in the facility.

Uvalde Police Department officials asked that evacuees remain patient as cots and mats were being prepared. They were also seeking volunteers and donations of food, water and blankets.
