Thirty-eighth Judicial District Judge Camile DuBose on Friday sentenced 26-year-old Brando Miguel-Santa-Maria Briseño to 25 years in prison for the 2017 murder of 35-year-old Francisco Javier Puente Jr.

Briseño was present in the Uvalde County Justice Center last week – where he pleaded no contest to the charge, meaning he neither disputes nor admits to the crime, but agrees to give up his right to a trial by jury. Briseño was also fined $10,000 for the first degree felony, which carried the possibility of up to 99 years in prison.

Puente was found dead Sept. 25, 2017, in his West Cargile Street apartment. According to Uvalde Police, Briseño stabbed Puente in the chest, back and leg with a box cutter.
