By 2023, Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District expects to have the first cohort of dual language students graduating from Uvalde High School.

The district is in the process of transitioning fully to dual language learning as they work to position Uvalde as a model for rural areas on the national stage, said Mario Ferron, Ph.D., director of the bilingual program for UCISD.

He said the program implementation is being accelerated to allow a full district implementation three years earlier than expected.

Ferron presented information regarding the status of the program to the board of trustees at the Oct. 28 meeting. He also said the district will be phasing out the English as a Second Language program.

The meeting was held in the Benson Educational Complex board room at 6:30 p.m.
