Break out your best hat, plan to bake something sweet, perfect your poker face, dust off your dancing boots and pack your running shoes: the Uvalde Honest Festival is days away.
The two-day event, set Friday and Saturday, is scheduled to coincide with Four Square Friday, the monthly event when downtown shops open for late-night shopping, and there will be live music and a street dance.
Four Square Friday takes place from 6-9 p.m.
There will be a poker run from 6-8 p.m. The $5 buy-in per round will begin at the Uvalde Grand Opera House, and players will need to visit Four Square Friday- participating stores to collect chips.
The hive jive street dance is scheduled from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., and the poker run winner will be announced at the dance. The street dance will take place on the downtown plaza and include music, lawn games, drinks and snacks.
Judging for the Bee in your Bonnet hat contest will begin at 9 p.m.
On Saturday, the day’s activities begin at 8 a.m. with a 5-kilometer fun run. The contest, which also includes a one-mile children’s fun run, will start and end at the downtown plaza. Entry fee for the 5K is $25 and the children’s fun run is $15. T-shirts were guaranteed for entries turned into the Uvalde Convention and Visitors Bureau, 300 E. Main St., by June 1.
Registration forms may be downloaded from uvaldehoneyfestival.com/event-information or picked up from the opera house, CVB, or local gyms. Completed forms may be turned into the CVB in advance or brought to the event.
Also on Saturday, vendors will open for business at 10 a.m., the midpoint of the 9-11 a.m. Breakfast with the Bees event.
Breakfast with the Bees, to be staged at the Uvalde Grand Opera House annex, is a children’s event that will include crafts, breakfast, a photo booth, and microscope setup to show youngsters what bees and plants look like up close. Tickets are $5 per person.
Judging for the bake-off will take place at 1 p.m., and a honey ambassador will be identified at 1:30 p.m.
Contestants entering the Uvalde Honey Festival bake-off may submit two entries but are eligible for only one prize. Submissions must be homemade and not store-bought.
Entries may include cakes, cookies, brownies or pies with honey as the main flavor. Contestants should not enter anything that requires refrigeration.
Entries should be checked in by 12:30 at the Uvalde Grand Opera House.
Contestants will be judged on their entry’s taste and appearance.
Prizes will be given for first and second place.
Fabulous and flashy hats will be celebrated on Friday during the Bee in your Bonnet Hat Competition. Three judges will decide first-, second-, and third-place winners. Contestants should report to the plaza fountain between 8:45 and 8:59 p.m. Winners will be announced at 9 p.m.
Studio 3 musical groups Country Heart, Cover Page and Surge will perform at various times throughout the day.
Country Heart is scheduled to be on stage from 10-11 a.m.; Cover Page, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; and Surge, 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Bee Talk sessions are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Alamo Area Beekeepers Association president Rick Fink is tentatively scheduled to lead the talks.
